The two she had had of Conner were the ones that felt the weirdest and were seemingly the worst. She really missed him, and the emotional problems weren’t really helping with anything. She found herself crying a lot as soon as she woke up, and not even knowing why. She knew there was something wrong with her that wasn’t just the wound. She could feel things that she’d never experienced before. She couldn’t really gauge how much time she had been in the room, but because she had been fed regularly, she guessed that she had had a terminal nervous breakdown three days ago.
She was getting better. She could feel it. And she wanted so badly for it to happen soon so that she could get out of these restraints and go do something active.
Her mind began to wander, and soon she began dreaming about soccer.
One of the members of the other team kicked the ball towards Rebecca. Why was she doing that? Then Rebecca realized that she was the goalie.
"Great." Rebecca muttered. This was the worst spot that she ever played in soccer. Rebecca tried to move, but couldn't. The soccer ball just soared through the air. It hit Rebecca squarely in the chest. She didn't fall down. She didn't move. The ball just bounced off and headed for the other goal. Then, Connor suddenly appeared and started to kick the ball to the goal. Rebecca stood where she was and screamed with joy as Connor scored a goal. Rebecca tried to move again, but was unsuccessful. She looked down and saw restraints on her that were connected to thin air. She should have been able to move, but this is was dream, and anything could happen. Connor started to run towards her. Why was he doing that?
****************
Connor was falling asleep in the plane. He tried to stay awake, but his eyes were so heavy.
Connor found himself on a soccer field. A soccer ball was soaring towards him. He kicked it, then turned around to see what else there was to see. He saw Rebecca as the goalie, just standing still. Connor ran to her.
"Are you dreaming?"
"Yes." Rebecca replied.
"So am I." Connor said.
"I hate being the goalie." Rebecca said.
"I love soccer." Connor replied.
"I can't move." Rebecca complained.
"Yeah, that happens when you're the goalie. You have to stay in that specific spot."
"No, not that, I can't move at all." Rebecca said.
"Oh, why not? You're not connected to anything." Connor grabbed Rebecca's wrist and she disappeared.
"What? Oh, you have to wake up now?" Connor screamed. Then he woke up.
"What is wrong with him?" a voice asked.
"He's been doing this ever since we were captured." Imraan replied.
"Urgh..." Connor moaned.
"You were talking in your sleep again." Imraan noticed.
"Figures,” Conner said with a cold glare. He laid his head back down on the pillow. “The dreams are getting weirder.”
"What type of dreams?" Laura asked. She was still handcuffed to Imraan.
"Oh, he's been moaning Rebecca's name ever since we got captured." Imraan cleared his throat. "Rebeeccaaa! Rebeccaaaaa! REBECCAAAAAAAA!"
Connor sprang up and punched Imraan in the face. The rest of the group was laughing.
"Stop it. I'm not controlling these dreams here!" Connor said loudly.
"Oh, we're not laughing at you, we're laughing with you!" the other female agent said, smiling. Connor tried to make his best serious face. The others just laughed even more, even Imraan, who was holding his nose.
Connor gave up and sat down.
****************
Rebecca woke up right before Connor touched her wrist. She sighed in disbelief.
"Right at the good part,” she muttered.
That’s when Rebecca noticed one of the nurses standing above her. The smile plastered to the lady’s face began to twitch. “How are you feeling?” she asked.
“Better,” Rebecca answered truthfully.
The nurse nodded. “My name is Alanine.”
There was a pause, then Rebecca asked, “What’s wrong with me?”
Alanine sighed. “I’m sure you do not wish to hear the scientific terms, so I will make this easy for you. Basically, you’ve been poisoned.”
“What?” Rebecca asked, disbelieving.
“Yes, it’s true. But you mustn’t worry. This poison won’t kill you,” Alanine answered. “I believe you have been encountering strange dreams and feelings?”
“How did you know?” Rebecca asked, surprised.
Alanine smiled again. “I am a nurse. I am also a medical scientist.”
“So…how long will it take for the dreams and stuff to wear off?”
“We believe three more days, considering your quick recovery,” the nurse replied. “The wound is healing nicely,” she added.
“When can I be released from these restraints?” Rebecca questioned.
Alanine gave her a skeptical look. “I guess that’s up to you. We’ll wait a day and see if you can handle these dreams on your own. We need you to stay here at the HIA, and you shouldn’t do anything physically exerting until you are fully recovered.”
“You mean you’re letting me go today?” Rebecca asked joyfully.
“It’s just a test,” Alanine said, opening the restraints.
Rebecca rubbed her wrists and smiled for the first time in, it seemed, weeks. “Thanks.”
“There is some other good news I must tell you before you leave this room,” Alanine said.
“Alright.”
“Three agents went on a mission yesterday to find the missing agents. They were successful. The two captured agents and the others should be arriving back at the HIA at any time.” Alanine winked and left the room.
Rebecca was happy. She was so happy she almost cried. After all she’d been through, this good news was like a feast to a man dying of hunger in the desert. She soaked it all up and left the room with a humongous smile.
